Galliano Knows Best!

It's on Day 2 of Paris shows but I must say GALLIANO served! JOHN GALLIANO has a long history of exploring different eras when designing his collections for Christian Dior; & this season was no exception - The inspiration was the late Fifties (when women were women honey!). Models with big hair waltzed down the runway to the iconic song Mrs Robinson from The Graduate for a show of geometric shapes, electric colours mixed with monochrome and bright prints. I LIVE for big hair & full on dramatic eyes (think Valley of the Dolls, Stepford Wives & the GREAT Jacqueline Susann) the collection tickled my fancy!

The models worked the runway with dramatic hair & eyes
BIG HAIR Ruled the runway at the Christian Dior Autumn/Winter 2008-9 Show - I love the make up - LOVE!

BIG geometric patterns, big eyes and even bigger hair were the order of the day at John Galliano's autumn/winter 2008-9 show for Christian Dior.

The models' gigantic hair worked perfectly with the lady-like suits Those at the show were transported back to Sixties America where ladylike houndstooth-checked suits with bell-sleeves met hot pink, purple and lime green silk dresses in A-line psychedelic prints. Wearable, bright & boxy suits had matching bags and short gloves while the models' gigantic hair and earrings kept the look fresh.
Some of the more luxurious looks were the mink and chinchilla furs, with oversized buttons, cut in A-line shapes, sparkly beads on vibrant evening dresses and shiny snakeskin suits that will translate into many a Jackie-O wannabe's wardrobe next season.
The colors where bright, bold & beautiful!

Accessories played a bit part in the collections- hats were worn low with a slight masculine appear .. .GAILLIANO really outdone himself!
Geometric patterns and beading were seen throughout the collection
Beautiful jewel-toned frocks paired with all the accoutrement's made this collection stellar

GIVENCHY has announced that it will be renewing artistic director Riccardo Tisci's contract for an unspecified amount of time. After three years at the helm of the women's couture, ready-to-wear and accessories collections that he has worked hard to modernise and make his own, Tisci's role has also been expanded to include the menswear collections and accessories - the first collection of which will be shown during the spring/summer 2009 collections in September. It is little wonder the fashion house puts so much faith in the designer. Having been passed from John Galliano and Alexander McQueen to Julien Macdonald before the arrival of Tisci, the creative direction of Givenchy has finally had an injection of what some liken to Ghesquieré at Balenciaga - a knack for knowing how to bring something new every season, while remaining in keeping with the essence of the iconic fashion house. Known for his darkly beautiful shows, flowing fabrics and muse in Maria Carla Boscone, Tisci has been the creative force to breath new life into the house of Givenchy. In conjunction with the renewal of his contract – and, of course, the design house's show at Paris Fashion Week - Riccardo Tisci and Givenchy unveil a new concept store, at 28 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, this Thursday, February 28.

Model Madness

THE LAUNCH of Gisele's debut design collection for Dolce & Gabbana is drawing closer and a star-studded party in Rome is being planned to celebrate the collaboration - and, never ones to do anything by halves, other launch events will also be held in New York, London, Dublin, Paris, Barcelona and Sao Paulo. The range, Bundchen by Dolce & Gabbana, is due to launch by the end of spring. And not a moment too soon; we hear the design house expects to make around $200 million from the collection - which will include clothing and shoes - in its first year. Usually other models tend to go low-end when they launch a line but this one should be very interesting...

FENDI DOES PARIS?

KARL LAGERFELD, always one step ahead, plans to stage a unique fashion show for Fendi in Paris during fashion week – to conicide with the opening of the house's new Avenue Montaigne store. It will be the first time that Fendi, normally shown in Milan, hits the Parisian catwalks but Lagerfeld has no intention of making it a normal show. According to WWD, he has come up with a "novel way of showing" that is neither "static" or "runway". Those who remember Lagerfeld's Fendi show at the Great Wall of China, will be waiting with bated breath to see what the designer has in store for the courtyard at LVMH's Paris headquarters.

New Shoes
By Sue Huey & Rebecca Proctor
Fusing exquisite design with engineering, shoe design is quite unlike any other fashion discipline. Feted in fashion magazines and on television, shoes have become more coveted, more collectible and more expensive in recent years, and contemporary footwear design is now one of the most important and interesting areas of the fashion industry.
Showcasing some of the most exciting and innovative contemporary footwear designers from across the globe, this book reflects the rich and diverse range of cutting-edge design. Using specially commissioned photography, never before published sketches, and original design material, New Shoes brings together a rich mix of desirable shoes, sandals and boots to illustrate the unique blend of design skill and craftsmanship that footwear design demands.
Being a budding shoe designer myself I ADORE this book - not only does it inspire me with pursueing my dream but it showcases all the genius' behind some of the most conveted items on the face of this earth! Bravo

Couture Interiors
By Marnie Fogg
Examining the imaginative and compelling way in which fashion has permeated 21st century culture, this book considers the relationship between fashion on the catwalk and architecture, interiors and products. Many fashion designers extend their aesthetic into interiors and products for the home as a natural progression from clothing the body.
The home is now subject to the same directional trends as fashion, in part because so many designers are extending their practice to include interiors, as well as products and accessories. The fusion between fashion and interiors has never been more relevant. The proliferation of ideas, the speed of manufacture, and an increasingly visually literate consumer, have all resulted in interiors being subject to the same desire for innovation, change and fashionability as fashion. This investigation of the hectic dissemination of trends takes the reader on an eclectic, adventurous excursion into living with fashion.
Couture Interiors is such a page turner! This compelling book showcases the creme de la creme in Interior Design & Fashion..
100 Years of Fashion Illustration
By Cally Blackman
A visual feast of 400 dazzling images, this is a comprehensive survey of the genre over the last century. The book also offers an overview of the development of fashion, as seen through the eyes of the greatest illustrators of the day.
Early in the century, fashion illustration reflected new, liberating currents in art and culture, such as the exoticism of the Ballets Russes, while the postwar period saw inspiration from the great Parisian couturiers. After the dominance of the celebrity fashion photographer in the 60s, a new generation of illustrators emerged, embracing the medium of the computer, while many returned to more traditional techniques.
This book is a MAJOR must -have for designers, stylists and anyone who appreciates fashion in all it's splendor !

BLONDS Rule!

THE BLONDS have officailly taken over NEW YORK - this past fashion week was rather forgettable with the expection of the show stopping collection by THE BLONDS - The show was breath taking - each look had a life of it's own & the detail work was insane - The design duo even had Christian Louboutin under their spell - his 20mm heels were the perfect accruements for the flawless collection .

Club Cavalli

NEVER one to shy away from a party, Roberto Cavalli is turning his knack for event organizing into a business - the Italian designer is preparing to open a chain of Cavalli Clubs. With plans already well underway, the first club is scheduled to open in Dubai this October & Cavalli is getting his ultra-glamorous references in order: there will be a red carpet, pretty girls on the door to welcome guests and an interior made up of "modern and Renaissance influences, the past and the future, and especially a Tuscan touch in the kitchen", he explains. Its opening will coincide with a new block of luxury residences he is opening in Dubai this year, and it is expected to be followed by clubs in London, Milan and Miami. But while the venture is going large-scale, the designer is determined that every venue should retain his strong signature. "Everything will be Cavalli, from the furniture down to the ice holder and the dishes," the designer tells WWD. AMAZING... I just hope this doesn't start a trend .. I would GAG if there was a House of Dereon Club...

Contrary to popular belief Diamonds aren't a girl's best friend, especially if these baubles origins are associated with corruption, neglect & inhumane treatment. Conflict Free Diamonds premise is to assure buyers that the diamonds being purchased are devoid of violence, unethical treatment towards workers & environmental abuse. Here's a few tips on what to do when purchasing diamonds..
  • Ask to see your retailer's official written policy on conflict diamonds. All retailers should have one! Seriously
  • Expect educated staff members - you're spending major coins on diamonds & you should not settle for an imcompetant jeweler. Every staff member should know their company policies & government regulations against conflict diamonds.
  • Look for definitions of conflict free that mention both environmental & labor considerations, as well as eliminating violence and wars. Conflict free means an ethically and environmentally responsible origin.
  • Look for diamonds originating from Canada. Fair trade diamonds are in the works in West Africa, but certification standards are still being developed. Until then, Canadian origin with accompanying certification is still the only sure guarantee of conflict free status.
  • Look for certification and tracking guarantees. Retailers should know every country and facility their diamonds have visited, from the mine to the store. NO Exceptions!!!

While it seems like a difficult endeavor it isn't - it's worth the effort to ensure that the diamonds you purchase are conflict free - who wants drama!
